WHAT IS PERSONAL ADVISEMENT?

Although Dr. Wilson dislikes the terms "life coaching," and "life coach," his remote services, on some levels, could be described this way. Personal advisement with Dr. Wilson, however, does delve much deeper than typical "life coaching." Because he is a doctor of clinical psychology, and an experienced meditator, Dr. Wilson is often able to create awareness, clarity, and insight in his advisement clients; even when those clients have tried other methods and found them lacking.
In a nut shell, mindfulness (developed formally and informally) is cultivated and emphasized as the primary tool for creating psychological awareness. An increase in the client's awareness of her own mental phenomena (thoughts, emotions, judgments, beliefs, options, perceptions, etc) works to help her see more clearly (from analyzing her own experience) that her personal and professional behaviors might need some adjustment. These ongoing adjustments, in turn, produce increased awareness which eventually becomes a kind of penetrative insight. From such insight comes a true transformation in a client's mind, speech, and behavior. Such a transformation will affect everything in the client's life, including: work, family, intimate relationships, and spiritual connections, and/or religious practices.
Many people from around the country and the world have engaged AMI's remote services to gain or increase meditation and introspective abilities, to improve their skills in working with their own minds (thoughts, emotions, etc), to improve their ongoing relationships with friends, family, and co-workers, to facilitate the creation of meaning and purpose in their lives, to clarify questions about human experience and suffering (aging, sickness, death, etc), and/or to receive input on a wide range of business, personal, or spiritual matters.
HOW IS PERSONAL ADVISEMENT STRUCTURED?
It must be made absolutely clear that Dr. Wilson's personal advisement services are not psychotherapy. While these services can often be a valuable supplement to genuine psychotherapy, there is no informed consent, there is no doctor-patient relationship, and thus there is no doctor-patient privilege involved in AMI's remote services. Moreover, these services are not capable of being as deeply penetrative and transformative as genuine, face-to-face psychotherapy (personal advisement is more generalized).
The duration of the personal advisement relationship is not set thing. The length of the advisement relationship is determined between Dr. Wilson and the client as the work moves along its natural course. Often a client has only three or six personal advisement sessions. Sometimes a personal advisement relationship continues for months. And many times, previous clients will just "check in" once or twice a year as a refresher or to further reinforce and evolve their previous work.
AMI's personal advisement services take place in two ways: 1). Via email, instant massaging, or Skype, and/or 2). Via telephone. Both methods may be utilized depending on the client's preferences and circumstances. The typical scenario is one session per week (60 minutes).
